The AGA, facilitated by Amazon Aid, hosted their first Learning Session of the year titled “The EITI Standard: Corporate Transparency and Integrity in the Extractive Sector” featuring Emmanuel Aguilar Burgoa, EITI Country Officer for Latin America and The Caribbean, and Alex Malden, EITI Policy Manager – both part of the EITI International Secretariat. This session focused on the EITI approach to transparency and integrity in the extractive sector and explained the concept of beneficial ownership within the extractive industry.

Amazon Gold Alliance (AGA) Learning Session: “The EITI Standard: Corporate Transparency and Integrity in the Extractive Sector”

Beneficial ownership transparency under the EITI Standard aims to identify the real individuals who ultimately own or control extractive companies, including those hidden behind complex ownership structures or political connections. This information is important across the entire extractive value chain, from licensing and production to revenue collection and spending.

By revealing true ownership, governments and civil society can prevent corruption, conflicts of interest, and tax evasion, and ensure accountability for environmental or operational failures. Examples from countries like Ghana and the Republic of Congo show how ownership data can uncover ineligible license holders or hidden political connections that lead to lost public revenue.

The EITI promotes not only laws requiring disclosure but also the practical use of ownership data, tracked through its Beneficial Ownership Transparency Tracker across 55 participating countries. This work complements global standards such as those from the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and the OECD, which also promote transparency to combat financial crime and improve governance.
