TRACKING AMAZON GOLD

PART 1: ON-THE-GROUND IMPACTS AND SOLUTIONS

This report was prepared by Charlie Espinosa and Kelsey Beyeler for the Amazon Aid Foundation. Special thanks to Charles Lyons, Christina Miller, Maggie Gabos, Sarah DuPont, Ben Vauter, and Susan Keane for assistance with the revision of this report. Layout by Ben Eppard.

This report gives an overview of the impacts of gold mining in each of the eight Amazonian countries, including the well-documented impacts of mercury contamination and human rights violations, as well as some lesser-known impacts, such as carbon emissions and outbreaks of malaria among poor miners. It also describes the major on-the-ground solutions underway to reduce the impacts of destructive gold mining. The report is the first in a two-part series, the second of which will provide an in-depth analysis of the gold trade and propose a set of market solutions.
