River of Gold Curriculum: Education That Saves Lives

Lesson One: Gold Mining

Gold mining in the Amazon is one of the most pressing environmental and social challenges facing the region today. The Amazon Rainforest is a biodiversity hot spot and a critical player in global climate regulation. However, illicit and informal gold mining is rapidly expanding across the basin, leading to severe deforestation, mercury pollution, water contamination, and the displacement of Indigenous communities.

This lesson explores the complex relationship between illicit and informal gold mining, environmental sustainability, and economic realities. By engaging with this topic, students will develop a deeper understanding of how global demand for gold affects ecosystems, human communities, and climate stability.

Through this inquiry, they will examine the trade-offs between economic growth and conservation, gaining the tools to think critically about sustainable resource management.
