Our award-winning documentary film Amazon Gold, produced in association with America’s Business Council, has been selected as one of a handful of projects to represent the United States at the 20th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP20) in Lima, Peru.

COP20 is a critical step in establishing what is to become perhaps the most significant climate change agreement ever reached. In 2015, the world will come together in Paris to sign a universal and legally binding agreement on climate to keep the inevitable warming of our planet to under 2°C. The goal for COP20 is to draft the agreement that will be adopted next year.

Amazon Gold will be screened at the U.S. Center inside the Pentagonitio, the site of the official negotiations, where all delegates to the conference will have the opportunity to stop in and learn about the critical issue of illicit and unregulated gold mining and what it means for climate change, biodiversity, and human health. With this year’s conference taking place in the capital city of Peru, not far from the heart of the Amazon, we feel this year is an opportune time to encourage our global leaders for the inclusion of standing forests in the forefront of developing effective climate change policy.

There will also be two screenings of the film outside of the negotiation center of the film at COP20 open to the general public. The first screening will be at Voces por El Clima, the public climate change fair with several themed pavilions, interactive educational exhibitions, lectures,  and other presentations. The Ambassador of the United States to Peru, Brian A. Nichols, will introduce the film which will be followed by a Q&A session with the Vice Minister of the Environment, Mariano Castro, Amazon Gold producer and president of Amazon Aid, Sarah DuPont, and director of the Amazon Carnegie Mercury Project, Amazon Aid board member Luis Fernandez.

The second public screening will be held in Parque Kennedy in the Miraflores district of Lima outdoors on a large inflatable screen. Miraflores is welcoming families to come picnic and learn more about the gold mining issue to raise awareness in Lima of the environmental issues in the Western Amazon.

We are honored to have received such an incredible opportunity and platform for raising awareness for the issue of illicit and unregulated gold mining. A heartfelt thank you to our friends at USAID Peru and the United States Embassy in Peru for making this all possible.
